Description
This the latest in my Greyhound Starfish collection and features the gorgeous original Greyhound image by artist Kathy Hoynes
The Pendant : A hand carved and finished pure silver Greystar pendant is mounted on a natural turquoise stone that was bezel set in solid sterling and measures 2.25" from the top of the bail to it's bottom and 1 3/4 " wide
The Necklace: I used a combination of gorgeous rough cut chunky aquamarine crystal quartzs beads, polished black onyx and oxidized pewter bali bead caps...This very substantial statement piece, definitely not for the faint of heart...But wow does it make a statement , I love the way it turned out, Chain is 22" long
Closure: A large oxidized 20 mm filigreed toggle closure perfectly compliments the scale and style of the necklace
ABOUT THE PENDANT:
I have long admired the work of Artist Cathy Hoynes of www.greyhoundstudies.com and I absolutely loved working with her on this project. Kathy seemed to 'get it' imediately when I asked her to come up with a greyhound drawing that incorporated a starfish somewhere in the image.
Kathy really outdid herself with the breathtaking image she presented to me, which we have now dubbed 'STARGREY'.
With no revisions neccesary, I imediately had the image cast in sterling silver and suspended in a slightly twisted sterling oval and topped with a substantial curlique bail.
I am thrilled to introduce this original artwork keepsake Greyhound pendant with it's elegant swirling S shape head and neck and curly starfish anchoring the base.
WHAT IS THE GREYHOUND STARFISH CONNECTION?
Those familiar with greyhound adoption may also be aware of the starfish poem and how it relates to the mindset of those who adopt these elegant, gorgeous, deserving, hounds.
My inspiration for these jewelry pieces stems from my personal identification with the poem.
The Starfish Poem
As I walked along the seashore
This young boy greeted me.
He was tossing stranded starfish
Back to the deep blue sea.
I said, "Tell me why you bother,
Why you waste your time this way.
There's a million stranded starfish
Does it matter, anyway?"
And he said, "It matters to this one.
It deserves a chance to grow.
It matters to this one.
I can't save them all I know.
But it matters to this one,
I'll return it to the sea.
It matters to this one,
And it matters to me."
